Mother’s Day Weekend Plant Sale!

Posted by on May 08 2014 | Events

Mother’s Day is also on the horizon, and for the 9th (!!) year we are teaming up with Phil and Ursala Altomare of Sacred Gardens. Once again they will host the weekend at their new nursery and garden center in Center Moriches–replete with music, vendors, and plants galore! Come by for organically grown vegetable plants, herbs, annuals, perennials, tropicals, and all things heirloom and rare.

The HOG will be there as well, with a table of the first of the season asparagus, spinach, bok choy, arugula, lettuce, parsnips, jerusalem artichokes, green garlic and more! Join us Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 10am-4pm. There will be local musicians stopping by throughout the weekend to serenade you as you peruse the offerings. There will also be several local artisans selling their goods and services. From ocean inspired paintings to bohemian clothing to massage therapy, you are guaranteed to find the perfect gift for mom. The vendors will be under the big green event tent and Sacred Gardens has a great new retail shop, so rain or shine, the show will go on!

On Sunday May 11th (Mother’s Day) is opening day for the Rocky Point Farmer’s Market! So stop by the corner of Prince and Broadway in Rocky Point for fresh HOG produce and eggs as well as grass fed meat, local bread, hand-dyed yarn, handmade soaps, and much more!

Let’s Plant Some Potatoes!

Posted by on Apr 30 2013 | Events

This Thursday May 2nd at 9am is the HOG’s Potato Planting Day! Come help us plant the potato crop! Members are welcome to come put in some volunteer hours, non-members are welcome to stop by too!

We will be planting about 15 varieties this season, including everything from the standard russet (Goldrush) to delectable fingerlings (Purple Peruvian and Banana) and
everything in between. While a farmer preps the beds and digs out some trenches, volunteers can cut the potatoes up into 2 oz “seeds.” Be sure there is at least one eye on each “seed.” Next we’ll bring the potatoes out to the field, and walk up and down the row dropping a potato “seed” in the trench every foot or so. We plant two rows in each bed, and sometimes it helps to press down on the potatoes a bit with your feet to get good soil to seed contact (little kid feet are just what the farmer ordered). Last comes a tractor pass to cover the trench up and disc a nice hill! We usually finish by 2. Come by and put in an hour or so!

Love ’em or hate ’em, you can’t deny the delicious power of a well cooked HOG potato!
