June 2, 2006 Share #1

Welcome to the HOG! We hope you’ll enjoy eating with us this season. Questions about how this works? Check out our member handbook which will we provided to you at your first pickup.  This newsletter will keep you up to date on what’s happening at the farm, what’s in your share, and give you some ideas about how to eat it.  Look to our website for an expanding recipe section, storage tips, etc. Please bring your own bags to the pickups. A canvas beach bag or two plastic grocery bags usually does the job. We will have organic canvas HOG logo bags for sale at the pickups, so buy one now to hold your veggies all season! You can also bring your kitchen vegetable scraps to compost at the farm. We are no longer providing plastic bags at the farm!

Whats Happening At the Farm
We are ready and eager to welcome you all to our season of growing and eating together. Welcome back to all of our tried and tested members and welcome to all of our new members. We farmers have been hard at work these past months nurturing seedlings, working the soil, awakening engines from their winter slumber, and myriad other tasks necessary to grow food for our 230 member families.

Share Payments Due May 31st

Tuesday, May 27th, 2008

Just wanted to remind everyone that share balances are due May 31st. You can send your checks to:
Hamlet Organic Garden
PO Box 256
Brookhaven, NY 11719

You may also pay your balance at the first pickup.  If you have a balance on your account, you will not be able to pick up your share without paying down some of it!  So please remember your checkbook!  If you are not sure what your balance is, call or email Jill at 286-7068 jill@hamletorganicgarden.org

The HOG still has some money available in our Flying Pig Fund.  The Flying Pig Fund is a scholarship fund donated by our members each season. If you are interested in applying for a schlolarship to help defray part of the cost of your share, please email mail@hamletorganicgarden.org with a letter describing your financial need, and how much money you’d like to apply for.

Letters are due by June 12th, and awards will be made at our board meeting June 14th.

Pickups To Start Week of June 3rd

Wednesday, May 21st, 2008

Due to an unusually cool and rainy May, we have decided to postpone pickups by one week.  Though we’ve had some sunny days, the nights have stayed in the low 40s–not cold enough to kill anything, but even greens don’t really grow until nights are in the 50s. Even the weeds aren’t growing!  But according to the NOAA, the end of this week and all of next week should bring more seasonable weather, so we’ll start with a bang on Tuesday June 3rd!

To make up for the lost week, we plan on going a week later at the end, so you won’t miss anything!

Annual Member Meeting Sat. May 17th

Sunday, May 4th, 2008

membes.jpgAll 2008 members old and new, wise, young, or otherwise, are to attend the annual member meeting of the Hamlet Organic Garden on Saturday May 17th at 10:00 am.  Coffee and fresh baked goods will be served (if you want to contribute call Ilene at 286-2513).  We will discuss the state of the farm, how our C.S.A. program works, introduce and elect new board members (all members are eligible to serve on the board, nominations can be sent to Board President Katherine Fritz at board@hamletorganicgarden.org).  Meet your fellow shareholders, meet the farmers, take a tour of the farm, get to know your farm!  The Pick-up coordinator training session will immediately follow the meeting.  Interested members can also stay after the meeting for work hours on the farm.
The Annual Member Meeting takes place in the Red Barn at the H.O.G. on 319 Beaver Dam Road, Brookhaven.  See you there!
